Summary

Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here

The final book in King's epic The Dark Tower series, sees gunslinger Roland on a roller-coaster ride of exhilarating triumph and aching loss in his unrelenting quest to reach the Dark Tower。
Roland Deschain and his ka-tet have journeyed together and apart, scattered far and wide across multilayered worlds of wheres and whens。 The destinies of Roland, Susannah, Jake, Father Callahan, Oy, and Eddie are bound in the Dark Tower itself, which now pulls them ever closer to their own endings and beginnings and into a maelstrom of emotion, violence, and discovery。
And as he closes in on the Tower, Roland's every step is shadowed by a terrible and sinister creation。 Finally, he realises, he may have to walk the last dark strait alone。。。

I came here to be scared, not to feel feelings!! Now I want a Billy Bumbler, now I want to talk in the High Speech constantly, now I want a revolver more than I ever did before。 TL;DR—The book ties up loose ends well, makes you feel a lot of feels, and makes you sad that there isn’t more。 So there’s that。 5/5* 。。。more

This series may not have ended how I would have wanted, but the ending strangely fits。 Though a part of me does wish I listened when Stephen King said to stop before the final ending。 I’m honestly not sure what I would rate this。 I gave it 3 stars because overall I did enjoy the series。 Some books were definitely harder to get through than others。 This was one of the harder ones for me。 Maybe I read this one with a more critical eye, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot and understood better why This series may not have ended how I would have wanted, but the ending strangely fits。 Though a part of me does wish I listened when Stephen King said to stop before the final ending。 I’m honestly not sure what I would rate this。 I gave it 3 stars because overall I did enjoy the series。 Some books were definitely harder to get through than others。 This was one of the harder ones for me。 Maybe I read this one with a more critical eye, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot and understood better why some people have told me they have a hard time with how Stephen King describes his female characters。 All of that said, I did still enjoy the series。 There were parts that made me laugh, cringe, roll my eyes in anger, and of course ugly cry。 。。。more

I'll confess that, while I think there are some fairly genius aspects to this book, there were parts where I was reminded of how I felt when I read Mockingjay (book 3 in the Hunger Games series)。 At points I wondered if we were getting rushed to the finish without the normal care and development I'm used to with most of King's works。 Once I hit the end of this book, I pretty much knew I'd be rereading the entire series。 I'll confess that, while I think there are some fairly genius aspects to this book, there were parts where I was reminded of how I felt when I read Mockingjay (book 3 in the Hunger Games series)。 At points I wondered if we were getting rushed to the finish without the normal care and development I'm used to with most of King's works。 Once I hit the end of this book, I pretty much knew I'd be rereading the entire series。 。。。more

There is nothing I could possibly say to do The Dark Tower justice。 Are endings ever what we hope them to be? And yet, I am satisfied。 It's never easy saying good-bye to our friends; and after the thousands of pages spent with Roland and his ka-tet, I feel as if they have indeed become my friends。 I'll leave this short with a quote from The Dark Tower: "I hope most of you know better。 Want better。 I hope you came to hear the tale, and not just munch your way through die pages to the ending。 For There is nothing I could possibly say to do The Dark Tower justice。 Are endings ever what we hope them to be? Did not want to put the book down。 As with many other SK novels, some of the characters were a bit of a letdown, but it did not take away from the journey。 I very much enjoyed the patented SK ending。

The Dark Tower, the final book in The Dark Tower series, the ending of Rolands long journey。 There is nothing that can be said about this book if you’ve not been reading the series, without spoiling every single thing, so I won’t bother with trying a synopsis。 You should probably know what you’re getting in to by this point。 The final instalment of the series has some very mixed reviews - people either love or hate the ending。 I went in to the series having the ending spoiled for me, so I think The Dark Tower, the final book in The Dark Tower series, the ending of Rolands long journey。 There is nothing that can be said about this book if you’ve not been reading the series, without spoiling every single thing, so I won’t bother with trying a synopsis。 You should probably know what you’re getting in to by this point。 The final instalment of the series has some very mixed reviews - people either love or hate the ending。 I went in to the series having the ending spoiled for me, so I think that gave me something like 10 years to prepare myself to not hate it entirely。 But, had I not known what to expect with this one, I think I would have been furious。 As was my mom when she read it, and told me how it ended because she was so angry。 With that in mind though, I can also see what people love it。 It is not a satisfying ending, but it is an impactful one, and honestly is so suiting to Rolands journey。 Which is probably what makes it infuriating in a way。 That is just the last few chapters of the book though。 The last book itself is the finale of the epic journey you expect。 It’s everything you could want from the conclusion of Rolands journey。 The friendship built culminates in the way you would expect, the story is heartbreaking, the fight scenes are glorious。 Everything about it was exactly what I wanted。 It’s just the ending that felt sort of like a sucker punch of disappointment。 To each their own for it though, you need to finish the journey to decide for yourself。 。。。more

Stephen King, by his own admission, cannot finish books。 Oftentimes his riveting stories simply peter out rather than come to a conclusion。 1,000 page works wrap up in 10 pages。 Sadly, The Dark Tower series ends with the proverbial whimper rather than bang。 The book picks up with our four heroes scattered across multiple timelines and worlds and starts promisingly enough。 The group is reunited to battle the breakers of the beam, the recipients of the evil nutrition provided by the Green Cloaks, Stephen King, by his own admission, cannot finish books。 Oftentimes his riveting stories simply peter out rather than come to a conclusion。 1,000 page works wrap up in 10 pages。 Sadly, The Dark Tower series ends with the proverbial whimper rather than bang。 The book picks up with our four heroes scattered across multiple timelines and worlds and starts promisingly enough。 The group is reunited to battle the breakers of the beam, the recipients of the evil nutrition provided by the Green Cloaks, the villains of book five。 After two pretty thrilling set-pieces the mission on which the group has been on for the past four books comes to a conclusion。 500 pages are left。 OF course, the journey to the Dark Tower is the ultimate point, but after the setpiece in the middle of the book Roland's journey honestly feels pretty superfluous。 His compulsion, necessary in earlier books, isn't really explained。 The ending itself, which I won't spoil, feels cheap and undercuts the sacrifices made throughout the series。 Truthfully, the final few pages feel more like a cheap twist in a second rate Hollywood thriller rather than the conclusion to an epic fantasy。 I don't regret reading these books。 They are the cornerstone to King's oeuvre and several of the books are exceptional, but man I wish the ending hadn't left such a sour taste in my mouth。 。。。more

How do you go on? When in your heart you begin to understand。。。there is no going back。”The physical and mental wounds the ring for Frodo and Dark Tower for Roland inflected on them, as well as the everlasting yearning for the ring and dark tower, ultimately made their life。。。and themselves。。。hollow。 In Frodo’s circumstance his future continued with the elves where he could heal instead of in the shire。 As readers of that series, knowing he’d live in peace left us a sad optimism。 There is no such optimism with Roland’s end。 One is left to ask what was the purpose of his suffering really in the author’s eyes? No one so heroic should suffer such a fate worse than death。。。and yet I have a theory。In the original poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came”, Roland is trained from a young age to be sent on a quest to the Dark Tower to save the fate of the world。 He is raised to believe that conquering the Dark Tower is essentially his birth right and his responsibility。 In his quest, however, he is confronted with the reality that there may be no Dark Tower at all, evidence is non-existent of the world ending, and it is a fool’s errand to continue。 Foolishness or not, misguided honor spurred the young Roland on, leading him to forsake his lover and any chance he had of joy in realizing his obsession。 Don Quijote-esque he goes mad in the desert and fights a dragon in the end。。。or is it a dragon? Better I leave that to you to find out。 If Steven King wanted to honor the poem’s ending, Roland’s ultimate fate is fitting。Will Roland’s soul ever have the chance to heal? To rest? We are stronger than we think。。。mayhap he escape his current doom。 Where there is life, there is hope。 Always。 。。。more
